Lost in Ontario: Belleville
Growing up, I was lucky to have parents that enjoyed a good day trip. We often found ourselves lost on a country road, exploring small towns near Kitchener where I grew up. We would stop at Mennonite stands to buy maple syrup. We would stop at farm stands to buy fresh produce. We would even go strawberry picking. It was wonderful. I can easily picture that 13 year old boy with his chin resting on his arm, gazing out the car window, taking in the fresh country air and day dreaming. Not a single road trip would pass without someone in the car uttering under their breath, “what a beautiful country we live in”. We would all nod our heads in agreement.
It really is a beautiful country and although I’m lucky to have seen a lot of it, there’s so much more to explore.
Lately, I’ve been feeling a little down at the thought of not being able to travel for the remainder of the year. It wasn’t until my recent day trip to a quaint little town called Belleville, that it dawned on me:
As things slowly start to open up, why not explore this beautiful country, starting with my own backyard?
So that’s the new plan. For the next few weeks, months or year(s), my goal is to get lost in my own backyard, starting local and then expanding coast to coast. I hope it inspires you to do the same. Come get lost with me!
Belleville
Surrounded by endless rolling hills and lush rural countryside, Belleville is located on the north side of the Bay of Quinte. The population is approximately 49,000. The name is perfectly fitting because she really is ‘belle’.
Getting there:
Nestled conveniently, between Toronto and Ottawa, Belleville is about 172 km East of Toronto. The drive is about two hours.
If you’re not in a rush, I suggest taking the country roads as opposed to the highway. It will add another hour to your trip, but it’s well worth it.
The drive is beautiful and scenic and you’ll see beautiful country homes, unique antique shops and some small ‘mom and pop’ type shops.
Eat:
The Boathouse is pretty much the best of everything. Beautiful outdoor patio overlooking the harbour where boats are docked and felt very much like a small town on the California coast.
I opted for the lobster tail with jumbo shrimp and scallops. It was delicious and I can honestly say that not a morsel of food was left on my plate.
Next, head over to the perfectly quaint city centre for some ice cream at Gourmet Diem.
Then take a stroll through the main street to take in the beautiful sites!
Like this beautiful alley that’s straight out of a European city.
Or this beautiful building that I imagined myself living in.
Wait you’re telling me this isn’t Europe? Nope. It’s Belleville.
And these beautiful murals…
And last but not least, surrounded by water!
Yes, Belleville ticks off all of the boxes for the quintessential charming small town. I’m sure there’s much more to see there and I’ll definitely be back!
