Lost At Home: DIY Projects & Inexpensive Decor Ideas For Your Home
As most of you know, I moved during COVID-19 and it was the best decision I made this year. Being crammed in a tiny apartment made me realize how important it was to have a comfortable living space, especially during social distancing and staying at home. You can read about that experience in one of my previous blog posts. I had a lot of people ask me about certain items in my new home so I figured I would share some of the fun DIY projects that kept me busy for a few months. I hope some of this inspires you!
Gallery Wall
This idea was presented to me by the talented virtual design team at Love by Lynzie. It simply involves mismatched vintage frames (some which I kept empty) with prints and travel photos. I love it because it has an old school gentleman’s cigar lounge vibe and also ties in my love for travel.
Firewood Rack
Having a working fireplace has always been a dream of mine but it also presented a new challenge: storing wood but also making it look nice. I was inspired by a spa experience I had in Ireland (photo below) and loved the idea of having 'exposed wood' as part of my decor.
Love by Lynzie's suggestion was to use two industrial pipes that are normally hanging racks from Amazon. I LOVE the result.
Air Plant + Old Brick Pieces
About two years ago, I discovered air plants and I am now obsessed with them. They require little maintenance and are quite beautiful. During my walks to Tommy Thompson Park (a nature preserve in Toronto), I always stumble across old brick rocks from previously demolished buildings from the city. I felt like there was a beauty to them and thought they would make perfect ‘holders’ for air plants. I love that they seem modern and old at the same time and it’s a nice way to bring old parts of the city into my home.
Eucalyptus Shower Bundle
I Love eucalyptus sprigs. They’re trendy, simple and smell amazing. I came across a few photos of shower bundles on Etsy and loved the whole look of it. If you smack the leaves a few times in the shower, it released the oils so that when you shower, you get that amazing refreshing scent. It’s pretty incredible.
Antique Paintings with Wall Picture Light
One of my favourite things about my new place is the two antique frames I have in my bedroom and above the fireplace . Quite a few people have commented thinking they look expensive, but the truth is, they are not. I am no art connoisseur by any means. The paintings spoke to me and they were cheap: Two for $100 from an antique store. Adding two wall lights from Wayfair (which are plastic but appear to look like brass) is an inexpensive way to make it look classic and timeless. This isn’t necessarily a DIY but involves antiquing and searching for the right light to make it appear more expensive.
Moss Bath Mat
Ok, so I never knew this was even a thing until my partner’s sister in law, Megan (who is also a plant fanatic) told me about moss bath mats. The moment I saw a photo, I knew I had to do this. Imagine stepping out of a refreshing shower onto bed of soft moss. I honestly feel like I am transported to a forest every time I shower. They are super easy to make. I used a mat purchased at a dollar store (Dollarama), moss from my partner’s mother’s backyard and foam sheets from Michaels. I used a YouTube tutorial found here, but there are several variations.
I’ve realized that I love DIY projects. Decorating a new place was such a nice distraction and there are so many things out there to get inspired by.
