Lost in Ontario: Galt
Disclaimer: As Ontario is potentially heading into another lockdown, my intention is not to promote travel at the moment, but moreover when it is safe to do so again. Be sure to add this one to the list!
Despite Spring being in the air and warmer days ahead, the past few weeks have been a bit tough for me. Lately, I have been really missing the good ol' days of travel and adventures. I've been experiencing wanderlust big time. As a remedy to feed the travel bug inside me, I decided to go on a day trip to one of my favourite little spots in celebration of my anniversary with Rikki.
Galt is a small quaint community and if you're looking for a little taste of Europe to cure your wanderlust, then you should consider a day trip here.
The beautiful historic buildings are built right along the Grand River's edge, giving it an old world charm reminiscent of many European cities that are built along canals.
Getting There:
Galt, Ontario is located about an hour West of Toronto and is a community in Cambridge, Ontario in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. The easiest way to get there is by taking Highway 401 West towards Kitchener-Waterloo.
Things To Do:
Take a Stroll
My favourite thing to do here is pretty simple: It always starts with a coffee in one of their local shops, then I go on a long stroll along the Grand River. The downtown area is small and easy to get around. Enjoy the beautiful architecture along the river as well as the beautiful bridges that cross the river.
Visit Cambridge Farmer's Market
On weekends, there's a farmer's market that dates back to the early 1800's, making it one of the oldest markets in Canada. There are several good stands, and I opted for the seafood vendor where I bought some fresh lobster tails and some sushi grade tuna. Yum!

Look for Handmaid's Tale filming spots
If you're a fan of the TV Series Handmaid's Tale like I am, you will notice that many scenes were filmed in Galt, which plays the Republic of Gilead in the TV series. The Wall along the river in particular is hard to miss!
You can find a complete guide to filming locations here.
Food: E.V.O Kitchen
E.V.O Kitchen is a modern restaurant that offers healthy, gourmet wraps and sandwiches and is the perfect spot for a lunch break. The restaurant is located inside an old 1920's building that was originally the Galt Knitting Company.
