Lost in Self Isolation: Home made bath bombs for the quarantined soul
I love taking baths and with all of this extra time on my hands with self isolation, taking a bath allows me to relax and also breaks up my day. It allows me to shake off the noise. Mariah Carey describes in her song 'Shake It Off':
"I gotta shake it off
Just like the Calgon commercial
I really gotta get up outta here
And go somewhere"
Me too, Mariah. ME TOO.
This lyric is very relevant because it references a series of popular 70’s and 80's Calgon commercials where a stressed out woman escapes a chaotic moment by asking Calgon to ‘take her away’ and ends up in a relaxing bath. You can see the video below. I can totally relate and although screaming children and barking dogs are not my pain point, my main escape would be the news and all the noise that surrounds this pandemic.
Take. Me. Away.
While this blog post has nothing to do with Calgon (although Calgon does sell bath bombs) it does have everything to do with escaping a chaotic state of mind with a relaxing bath and a nicely scented bath bomb. So, I encourage you to kill some time by making your own bath bomb, then kill some more time by taking a bath and then even more time by allowing your imagination to ‘take you away’ because you SO deserve it.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Difficulty Level: Easy
Estimated Cost: $6 (with the most expensive component being the citric acid)
Warnings: Will leave you feeling light headed and relaxed
Tip: All of these ingredients can be ordered at your local online store and for those in the GTA, click here!
Materials:
1 cup baking soda
1 cup Epsom salts
1/2 cup coconut oil
1 cup citric acid
10 drops essential oil (I used eucalyptus oil)
Optional-colorant (I used blue and green)
Mold:
If you're looking for the traditional bath bomb molds, you can purchase them here but I kept it simple and used silicone ice cube trays that I already own.
Directions:
In a medium sized bowl, combine baking soda, citric acid, and epsom salts until all ingredients are well combined.
Next, stir in your essenial oils and slowly add the coconut oil. Mixture might slightly fizz as water makes that happen.
If you are doing different colours, divide the mixture in a few bowls and start adding the colourant until you get your desired shade.
Press mixture into your molds so that they are firmly packed. Let dry for 24 hours. Carefully remove from molds.
Finally, plop the bath bomb in the bath, pour yourself a glass of wine, turn on some music and enjoy.
