Lost in Kenya: The Ultimate Safari Adventure at Masai Mara National Reserve

Ever since my first safari adventure through the stunning landscapes of South Africa nearly a decade ago, I've been gripped by an insatiable yearning to experience one again. That exhilarating experience evoked a sense of being immersed in my very own 'Jurassic Park’. Although I didn’t see any big cats at the time (cheetahs, lions, Leopards), each animal sighting felt straight out of a thrilling blockbuster. As a child, my fascination with these incredible creatures was such that I often found myself engrossed in school projects centered around the speed and elegance of cheetahs, their unparalleled grace captured within the pages of my essays. Now, as the call of the wild beckoned once more, I was eager to embark on another safari adventure, to rekindle that childhood wonder and experience the untamed beauty of nature all over again.

How to Choose a Reputable Tour Company?
Our safari was run by Real Africa, which was outsourced by the company we used in Rwanda (Gorilla and Wildlife Safaris). I was very happy with the overall experiences as well as the communication and organization. When to Visit?
The timing of your visit to Masai Mara can greatly influence your safari experience. Peak wildlife viewing during the Great Migration occurs between July and October, while other times offer unique experiences such as calving season or fewer crowds. We opted for fewer crowds and dry season in January, although with global warming, we did experience a bit of rain.

Obtaining Visas and Permits
Ensure a hassle-free journey by researching visa requirements well in advance. Acquiring necessary permits for entry into Masai Mara National Reserve is essential; your tour operator can often assist with these arrangements. Tips & Tricks
Make the most of your safari adventure with insider tips and tricks. Pack binoculars, a camera with a good zoom lens, and lightweight, neutral-colored clothing. Additionally, bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated during game drives.

What to Wear
Choosing the right clothing ensures comfort and safety during your safari. Opt for neutral, lightweight, and breathable fabrics that blend with the environment. Hats, sunglasses, and closed-toe shoes are also advisable for protection from the sun and elements. I wore a lightweight white shirt that had a lot of stretch and offered both style and comfort along with cargo shorts with pockets for all of my valuables.

The Experience
The Masai Mara National Reserve offers a symphony of wildlife and natural beauty. From thrilling game drives to witnessing the Great Migration, each moment was a brushstroke in a vivid canvas of African wilderness. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and was thrilled to have witnessed the big 5! Seeing Cheetahs was a lifelong dream and watching them in their natural habitat was unreal.

Stay: The Ashnil Mara Camp
Nestled along the banks of the Mara River, the Ashnil Mara Camp offers an unparalleled safari experience without breaking the bank. Here, the spacious tents redefined the meaning of 'glamping,' seamlessly blending opulence with the raw beauty of the African landscape. Imagine waking up to the sound of hippos grunting only metres away, stepping out onto your private veranda with a coffee in hand to catch the sunrise painting the savannah with hues of gold and orange. After a day of exhilarating adventures, returning to a comfortable lodge is key. I was able to Indulge in delicious food served against the backdrop of the African sunset and reminisce about the day around the campfire, serenaded by the sounds of the wild. I can’t recommend this experience enough. It’s truly once in a lifetime!
