Lost in Fairmont Banff Springs: Christmas at The Castle in the Rockies
It should come as no surprise to anyone that Christmas is my absolute favourite holiday. You can read more about where my love for Christmas sprouted from here. When I visited Fairmont Banff Springs a few years ago during the summer months, I knew I had to come back during the holidays. Perfectly perched at the base of Sulphur Mountain and with breathtaking views of the surrounding area, the castle offers and idyllic setting for a magical Christmas getaway. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, the castle continues to unwrap its many gifts in the form of Christmas related activities and experiences offered for the young and young at heart. Here’s an overview of my stay.
Getting There
The Fairmont Banff Springs is located a little over 1.5 hours from Calgary International Airport (YYC). It’s conveniently located at the south end of the Town of Banff. While the drive starts off a little flat when leaving Calgary, you will soon find yourself surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. It’s a beautiful drive.
A Magical First Impression
As we pulled up to the castle, I felt strong sense of joy. The hotel towered over us with snow-capped peaks in a grandiose way – almost like Hogwarts - and although we were a ways away from home, we felt right at home immediately. The lobby was inviting and warm and I felt as though I was starring in my own Hallmark movie. Checking into our rooms was like unwrapping our first gift - we were met with breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains along with snow-covered trees.
Journey to the North Pole
Our first night commenced with a stroll through the iconic Mt. Stephen Hall and the charming Spanish walkway, setting the stage for what the next few days would bring.
This new castle walk-through experience was recently unveiled for the very first time to the public and all of the proceeds go to the Make a Wish Foundation. The entire walkway was adorned with Christmas decorations, transporting us to a world I thought only existed in fairy tales and movies. On several occasions, I found myself standing in awe, jaw to the floor as the incredible feeling of nostalgia wrapped me like a warm blanket.
Somebody pinch me.
Festive Food & Drink
360 Dining Dome
Offered between December 15th and January 1st, the ‘Festive Dinner’ at the 360 Dining Dome is like dining in a snow globe. We indulged in a festive themed dinner in the private dome, which is available for both hotel guests and non-hotel guests to book. Surrounded by panoramic views of the Canadian Rockies and the timeless Castle, it was an evening steeped in delicious flavours and unparalleled service. Highlights included the Seafood Plateau, which included freshly shucked PEI Oysters, Citrus Poached Prawns and Atlantic Lobster. We also really enjoyed the Brant Lake Wagyu Filet. The 360 Dining Dome can be booked at a starting rate of $225 per person.
The Thirsty Reindeer
The Fairmont Hotel properties have become quite popular for their holiday pop-up bars. The Thirsty Reindeer at Fairmont Banff Springs was the perfect pre-dinner stop for festive cocktails that got us right into the Christmas spirit. Each cocktail is perfectly crafted and Instagram worthy!
In Room Dining
For one of the mornings during our visit, we decided to enjoy in-room dining. While I enjoy visiting the various restaurants, there’s just something about enjoying a delicious breakfast in the comforts of your own room. Donning our Christmas pyjamas, our morning set the tone for a day brimming with exploration.
Grapes Charcuterie
During a history tour, we learned that the location of the ‘Grapes’ restaurant was the old writing room where guests used write letters when visiting the hotel. How romantic? The restaurant is cozy and intimate and serves up delicious tapas and charcuterie. It overlooks the original hotel entrance and its walls are steeped in history. We enjoyed a delicious assortment of meats and cheeses paired with wine.
Vermillion Room
The Vermillion Room at Fairmont Banff Springs stands as a haven for delicious meals, inviting guests into an atmosphere of timeless elegance. Whether starting the day with a hearty breakfast or indulging in a leisurely lunch, the restaurant exudes sophistication and charm. We enjoyed both breakfast and lunch here and on both occasions, the meals were fantastic. With its refined yet welcoming ambiance and attentive service, dining at the Vermillion Room promises a delightful experience amid the grandeur of Banff's breathtaking scenery.
Experiences & Activities
Fire Pit and S'mores Experience
Picture this - nestled by a crackling fire, toasty s'mores in hand, and that breathtaking wintry panorama of the mountains. Yes, that's what you get with this experience at Fairmont Banff Springs! It was the perfect remedy after a nice outdoor hike. We sipped on warm drinks, roasted marshmallows, and soaked in the serene view. Cozy vibes guaranteed!
Self-Guided Hike to Bow Falls
Fairmont Banff Springs is surrounded by nature and there are several hikes to enjoy around the property. Surrounded by snow-covered trees, we decided to lace up our boots for a nature-filled adventure to Bow Falls. The self-guided hike to Bow Falls offers a short and moderate hike through Banff's natural beauty. Trust me; the views are worth every step.
Mixology Session at Rundle Bar
If you’re looking to shake things up a bit (literally and figuratively), join a mixology session at Rundle Bar! Each Fairmont Alberta property has a cocktail crafted after it: Emerald Glow for Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, Wildflower for Fairmont Banff Springs and Iconic Peak for Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. We were able to get our creative juices flowing as we crafted each of these iconic cocktails alongside a skilled mixologist. It's not just about drinks; it's an artful experience that'll leave you buzzing with newfound mixology prowess.
Heated Indoor & Outdoor Pool
This is the ultimate relaxation! Fairmont Banff Springs has an incredible indoor/outdoor pool and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a must. Whether you prefer the crisp mountain air or a cozy indoor swim, it's the perfect way to kick start your day or unwind after a day of exploring. Did you know Marilyn Monroe also stayed at Fairmont Banff Springs while filming a movie in the early 1950’s? I have included a side by side image of Marilyn and I enjoying the pool below!
In Search of Christmas Spirit
One cool evening during our stay, we experienced the holiday magic with ‘In Search of Christmas Spirit’. We bundled up for a stroll through the Cascade of Time Garden, where a live Christmas story unfolded, narrated by the park's enchanting wildlife. This was such a fun experience. I’ve been to several light shows to date, and this one takes the cake. Each guest is provided with a lantern to walk through the park, which further enhances the experience.
Spending Christmas at the Castle in the Rockies was an experience like no other. This time of year evokes a sense of nostalgia within me and this experience really enhanced that feeling for me. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a foodie, a cocktail aficionado, or just in search of that cozy winter escape, Fairmont Banff Springs has it all. With cherished memories, we bid adieu to this magical place, the echoes of Christmas joy from the past few days lingering fondly in our hearts.
I’m grateful to Fairmont Hotels for sponsoring this trip to the Canadian Rockies! I’m excited to share my experience, as I know many of you will love it like I did! All views and opinions expressed are my own.
