Lost in Newfoundland: A Whirlwind Adventure on our First Day in Newfoundland
Over two decades ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Newfoundland and ever since, I’ve longed to come back. I vividly remember disembarking the ferry where I was greeted with large, ancient rock formations that towered over me like skyscrapers. It felt like an entirely different country to me. Located in eastern Canada, Newfoundland is a hidden gem that is often overlooked by travelers. While many fellow Canadians often boast about its beautiful counterpart provinces, for reasons I can’t quite understand, Newfoundland often gets overlooked.
I've just landed after many years, and let me tell you, the adventure has already begun! Today, I'll take you on my journey through my first day in this stunning land of rugged coastlines, vibrant houses, and unparalleled hospitality.
After settling into our cozy Airbnb in the heart of St. John's vibrant downtown, known as Jellybean Row for its colorful row houses, I couldn't wait to immerse myself in the local culture. Stepping outside of our own colourful home, I found myself amidst a vibrant tapestry of hues, each house boasting its unique pop of colour. It was a kaleidoscope of colours that instantly made me fall back in love with this place.
Eager to quench our thirst and embrace the local flavours, Rikki and I made our way to the historic neighborhood of Quidi Vidi. Nestled along the shores of a picturesque harbor, Quidi Vidi is a hidden gem known for its small-town charm and breathtaking views. Our first stop was The Quidi Vidi Brewery, where they craft some of the most refreshing brews you can imagine.
As we stepped into the brewery, we were greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere. The friendly staff welcomed us and guided us through a tasting experience that transcended ordinary beer appreciation. They had a specialty beer I couldn't resist trying - the legendary Iceberg Beer. Made with water sourced from icebergs that grace the Newfoundland coast, it was a truly unique and refreshing experience. Sipping this crisp concoction, I couldn't help but feel connected to the beautiful nature surrounding me.
With our thirst quenched and our spirits high, it was time to savour the flavours of Newfoundland cuisine. Monday nights at Mallard Cottage during lobster season meant one thing - their legendary Lobster Boil. This historic cottage-turned-restaurant offered a cozy ambiance that felt like stepping back in time. The aroma of succulent lobster filled the air, creating an irresistible temptation.
We feasted on a prefixed meal of freshly caught lobster, cooked to perfection. Each bite was an explosion of flavour, a celebration of the ocean's bounty. Paired with delicious sides like smoked potatoes and salt cod tartare, this meal was a true feast for the senses. It was a delightful culinary experience that encapsulated the essence of Newfoundland's coastal charm.
Eager to burn off some of those lobster calories and explore the surrounding natural beauty, we embarked on a nearby hike. Following a scenic trail along the rugged coastline, we were treated to breathtaking vistas of dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. It was an invigorating adventure that reminded me of the raw power and beauty of nature.
As the sun began to set behind the overcast skies, we reflected on the incredible experiences of our first day in Newfoundland. From the colorful streets of Jellybean Row to the enchanting flavours of Iceberg Beer and the indulgent lobster feast at Mallard Cottage, it was a day filled with memories we’ll cherish forever.
Newfoundland, you've captured my heart. Your warmth, your beauty, and your unique charm have left an indelible mark on my soul. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings as we continue our exploration of this awe-inspiring province.
Stay tuned for more tales from my Newfoundland adventures. Until then, keep chasing the magic that lies just beyond the horizon.
Yours in wanderlust,
Luis
